Supplements for Shingles

A beloved family member has come down with shingles and I really hate that it gets worse before it gets better. So I jumped in and ordered up some supplements and can't wait to try them out on my patient.

What is shingles?

Shingles (herpes zoster) comes from having the chicken pox virus as a child and then getting a compromised immune system or being under a lot of stress. Lately we have had so much going on with work and children and house and church etc... So our case was from stress which lowers the immune system.

Here is what I am going to recommend:

Antivirals: (to fight the virus)
Olive Leaf
Licorice Root
Astragalus

Nervine: (to help repair any nerve damage the virus has inflicted)
Noni
or helichrysum

I also wanted to know what my loved one should eat or not eat.

Foods that contain the amino acid Lysine are particularly helpful in the Shingles diet. Below are a few of them.

All kinds of meats esp. fish
Dairy (yogurt, cottage cheese, milk etc.)
Eggs
Pears
Apricots
Avocados
Pineapples
Green Beans
Asparagus

The amino acid Arginine foods should be avoided just aggravating symptoms and prolonging the virus. Here are some of them:

Pecans and other nuts
Seeds
Tomatoes
Wheat Germ
Brussels Sprouts
Grapes
Chocolate
Sugars

Another way to combat Shingles is to have a chiropractic adjustment to align your spine because the virus dwells in your spine. It is thought that misalignment of the spine may cause the outbreak of shingles along with compromised immune system. I would say if you could, it would be worth a try.

There are many other herbal combinations you can do some research or ask your herbalist or naturopath. I am an herbalist and I can also recommend some Natures Sunshine products as a representative. Just ask me in a comment or get on our facebook page.
